Northern found themselves at risk of slipping into the relegation positions in a must win game against Haddocks. With Neil Thomas being stuck in traffic with Ashish Chatap and Jarryd Wilkins in tow it was fortunate that Northern won the toss and were able to bat first.

Chris Baker and Jimmy Vaile opened the batting and started off steadily before Jimmy was caught for 4. With Snowy only just arriving Carl Manley, playing his first game in a year, was sent in at 3 and started strongly hitting a 4 and a baseball slog 6 over mid off. This change of pace prompted Chris to open up and he hit 3 consecutive fours, 2 of which just failed to carry the rope. A couple of very expensive overs brought up 50 runs but when Carl was caught on 19 the runs stopped. Snowy in at 4 was struggling with the very slow pitch and bowling and was out for just one.

The first change bowler came on and his first ball was chipped straight to a fielder by Chris and Northern found their hopes of a good score in the balance. Ashish started well but when Ashley Chedzoy, captaining for the day, was bowled to a very slow ball that rolled under his bat things looked bleak. Some big shots from Ashish tipped the balance again and when he was run out in the 17th over on 30 Northern’s hopes looked far better.

Dave Manley (3NO) and Dan Perkins (4NO) rotated the strike with singles in the last over including a cheeky reverse sweep off the last ball off the innings as the score reached 106.

The score was almost certainly above par on such a slow pitch but Haddocks started well enough although some good close fielding meant their required run rate kept rising. Ashley picked up an LBW and a second wicket care of a tumbling catch from Jimmy. Ashish followed this up with a generous LBW before bowling another and suddenly Haddocks were looking out of it. Brett Clarke and Perkins came on to bowl and Perkins found the edge in his first over and Dave took the safe catch behind. The game was up when Baker had a direct hit run out and as the overs ticked over Dave and Snowy combined twice for run outs, Perkins picked up a second wicket causing a batsmen to play on and Haddocks were all out for 68 when Neil Thomas came on to bowl the 17th over and he picked up three dots before the fourth ball was chipped to Jimmy at square leg.

A good performance from Northern with some attacking fields set by stand in captain Ashley who’s record with the armband now reads 2 games, 2 wins.

Following a poor game against GFC Northern were back in action against Highwaymen & Taverners. The game was touch and go at the start with some light drizzle falling in the car park but it would soon brighten up and actually prove quite warm. Jimmy Vaile lost the toss, as per usual, and we were put into the field.

However unlike the two previous games Northern seemed far more up for it and Ashley Chedzoy taking a wicket in the first over only helped the mood. A few tight overs from Ashley and Ashish Chatap including consecutive maiden overs really turned the screw. The H&T #3 was starting to compile an innings but a suicidal run against the arm of Chatap proved costly as Dave Manley took the ball and off came the bails.

Good spells from Dan Perkins and Brett Clarke brought a wicket apiece care of catches from Manley and Barrie Willacott and it was only a late flourish in the last few overs that dragged the Taverners up to a decent score of 86.

Jarryd Wilkins and Chris Baker opened the batting and started promisingly getting Northern well above the run rate with a boundary every over until Baker got caught for 13. When the change spin bowler came on Snowy crashed him for consecutive boundaries off his first two balls before getting caught for 23 and it was then Northern started to look nervy. Ashish had faced a few overs for 1 run before being LBW and Jimmy and Ashley both struggle to get going against the spinners.

With the run rate hovering at 4 an over after 14 Ashley took the initiative with a double figures over before getting caught off the last ball of that over but Russell came in and thanks to a misfield the scores were level and and a leg bye clinched the win with 2 overs in hand.

Highwaymen and Taverners become the first time this season that Northern do the double over and we look forward to the next game against rivals the Duke of Clarence who we’ve had a win and a loss against already this season. Ashley picked up man of the match honours thanks to his top scoring 24 and a good spell of bowling.

The pitch was the worst we’ve played on this season

We dropped 7 catches, only one of which was half way difficult.

Dave missed an easy stumping and could have had another.

We let them score too many for the pitch even though we bowled them all out.

They bowled better than we did.

We give too many LBWs compared to everyone else in the league.

We were run out four times.

We were all out and had 3 ducks.

We lost.

Left it a bit long to write a proper report so here are the high and lowlights. Baz dropped a pudding early on from a player who went on to score 64. Couple of other dropped catches as well and some poor fielding allowed Cavaliers to score 135.

Northern batted much better than they’d fielded and Jarryd, Charles and Ashish all got decent scores but no-one hung around long enough to see the game out. Martin was ultimately the closest we got to a hero as he scored 2 off his only and the final ball to get Northern to 120 and maximum batting points care of an overthrow.

After going down to Cardiff Asians Northern took on a team at the same end of the table as themselves.

Being put into bat on what was probably the flattest and hardest outfield Pontcanna have ever served up Northern knew a decent score would be required. In form Jarryd Wilkins opened the batting with Ben Horlock and the two raced along in the early overs before Ben lobbed a straightforward catch to mid on and although Charles Brain came in looking confident Snowy’s quickfire 20 ended as a carbon copy of Ben’s dismissal.

This brought Vaile in to bat following his confidence boosting 14 earlier in the week and he rotated the strike well allowing Brain to play his shots as the runs kept coming. Then looking to put a full toss into Sophia Gardens Charles picked out mid off and his swashbuckling 22 came to a close. Ashley Chedzoy came and went for 6 and Ashish Chatap edged behind for a single exposing Northern’s lengthy tail.

Dan Jones however had other ideas and with Jimmy starting to attack too and some excellent running they both started to build the highest partnership of the innings and when the final batting point looked doubtful with 2 overs remaining a few more boundaries and a last over of 14 placed Northern on a handy 131. Jimmy was run-out off the last ball for 34 and Dan a career best 16NO.

Northern had every reason to believe enough runs were on the board given Haddocks previous matches but Walker and Musgrove started well and Horlock’s first over was expensive but he pulled one out of the bag when Jimmy held a catch off the last ball when 13 runs had come off the previous 5.

Clarke came on and bowled 2 mixed overs but took another and at the other end Chatap took two wickets, one ball clipping the very top of the off bail and the other a plumb LBW decision. Perkins replaced Chatap and bowled his best spell in a while taking 2 wickets for 12 off 4 overs and Brain’s two over spell took 2 wickets and was only spoiled by a big six over his head. Only one more wicket for maximum points was required with 2 overs to go but it just wouldn’t come as Workman and Preece dug in and after Snowy took some stick in the penultimate over going for 13 it was Ashley who shattered the stumps with 3 balls to go as Haddocks tried to get themselves another batting point. All out for 93 and 38 runs short of Northern’s total.

An excellent performance and our first 20 pointer in a good while and it was good to see the full bowling arsenal get a chance to bowl.

Essentially we did bowled OK for the first 15 overs keeping the score down to 88 before a blitz in the last 3 took the score to 137. In reply we managed to be only two runs down at the 15 over mark but a flurry of wickets in the last over put paid to any chance of victory as we finished on 110.

Jarryd was excellent scoring 59 before edging behind in the last over.

Northern were back in action against Duke of Clarence following defeat to them in the cup last week.

Following the success on Sunday Northern went into this game hoping to turn the tables on Duke of Clarence following their comprehensive defeat last week. Ashish Chatap, Dan Jones and Jason Gibson came in to the side that played last Wednesday.

Ashish, making his debut in a competitive match, was entrusted with the new ball in the absence of Gareth Jones and immediately came up trumps. His first ball turned sharply to worry the batsmen and his third ball was skied high into the air with David Manley taking a catch to remove the dangerous Kyle Offer for a duck – 46 runs less than he scored the previous week. Chatap’s second over was equally impressive as he clean bowled his victims off his 5th and 6th balls.

Ashley Chedzoy completed a two over spell before Ben Horlock came on and used his variation of pace to keep the batsmen on their toes. Ashish took his 4th wicket and was unlucky not to get the 5th but it didn’t stop him finishing with the excellent figures of 4-12 off 5 overs. Jimmy Vaile took a safe catch off Palmer, Chedzoy an outstanding one handed effort off Horlock and the Duke of Clarence were struggling badly. Gibson replaced Horlock and was immediately effective, his sharp turn bowling Patel before the remaining dangerman Morse (38) top edged over the keeper only to find the safe hands of Russell Palmer at fly slip.

Charles Brain took the 17th over and after frustrating the batsman for 2 deliveries picked up a plumb LBW decision before finishing in the innings with a direct hit run out from the last ball of the 17th to leave Northern with a target of 79 for victory.

Ben and Jason were given opening bat duties and Ben started well but Jason was bowled for 0. Charles Brain went in and he and Ben started making inroads into the total, Ben scoring some fantastic boundaries.

The tide turned when Charles was caught on 8 and then Vaile fell for 0. Ben kept the runs coming but Ashley (1) skied one into a safe pair of hands and Russell hung around for several balls but was bowled for 0. When Ben was bowled for 33 and Northern were still 15 or so runs short with 3 wickets remaining things looked bleak but the man of the moment Ashish made certain of Man of the Match honours as his composed 16 alongside the equally important 3 of Dan Jones guided Northern home with 2 overs to spare. Ashish’s boundary off the last ball was particularly key as it made sure Northern passed 80 and meant an extra batting point than would have been gained had they got to 79 with a single.

Northern made their 40 over debut against Barry Wanderers. Report now included. A Northern side lined up to take on their first game of 40 over cricket in a game organised by Ashley.

Eventually everyone managed to find the ground although batting was well under way when Dan Perkins rolled up having covered half of Sully looking for the place. The ground was quite small but the bowl shape meant that the distances weren’t quite as short as they might first appear.

Ben Horlock and Gareth Jones opened up and Jones fell to Fenton in the third over for 2. This brought Aussie new-boy Jarryd Wilkins to the crease along side his house mate and Northern set about establishing a partnership as Ben raced along with a flurry of boundaries before a leading edge to a poor ball saw him safely caught in the 7th over (for 22). Alarm bells were ringing at this point about Northern’s ability to last through their allotted overs but Martin Britton got his head down and he and Jarryd managed to move the score along while using up the overs of the opening bowlers. Martin survived an LBW shout which he responded to with a boundary and it was the 13th over when Fenton again came up trumps as he bowled Martin with Jarryd safely past 20.

Ashish Chatap came in with time to demonstrate his batting ability for the first time this season and after playing himself in for a bit he started to open up with some good shots. Fenton and Hill were bowled straight through bringing in Burgin and Denning and after plundering another boundary from Denning Jarryd was unlucky to be adjudged LBW next ball – for 31 – perhaps a victim of the one that Martin got away with earlier in the day. Barrie Willacott was next in and he played a few good shots – Ashish fell in the 22nd over for 22 and Baz followed in the 27th for 15.

Ashley Chedzoy and Andy Gill were now at the crease and Ashley was solid while Andy Gill played some uncomplicated attacking shots and while he gave opportunities he was still scoring some good runs. Ashley eventually fell to Wade for 27 bringing in Dan Perkins who together with Andy kept the score going along before they fell in consecutive balls to Wade, Andy on 20, Dan on 13.

Northern’s final wicket partnership of David Manley and Brett Clarke with the score on 180 and 7 overs still to bat. Dave and Brett set about batting through until the end and after several wides and mistimed shots Dave launched Wade back over his head with a shot that fell just inside the rope and then Brett matched and beat that with consecutive fours off John. In the end Manley was bowled by Richards attempting a big shot after 38.1 overs but by this time the partnership had reached 23 and Northern had set a decent enough 203.

Following a quick lunch – a first for Northern, unless you count one of Barrie’s liquid lunches during an innings, Northern were out in the field. Barry had scored 240 the previous week so it was likely to be a decent contest.

Jones and Chedzoy were to open the bowling and when Gaz sent the first ball wide and then got clipped away for 4 from the first balls of the innings things looked ominous but then Ashley had Norman back in the hutch for one as Dave took a regulation catch behind.

Then came a poor couple of overs as Ben shelled a catch in the slips from Gaz before Manley grounded an edge behind and Britton dropped a high one from Ashley. Gaz soon made amends cleaning out the stumps of the dangerous looking Hill with a perfect inswinger before King followed two overs later caught behind by Manley although the referral system may have given him a reprieve.

After Ashley’s 6th over Horlock came in and the screw was tightened as Gaz’s two consecutive maidens to complete his spell and Ben took the wicket of the dangerous Fenton with a quicker ball in his second over. Burgin soon followed to Ben for 1 and Perkins started well bowling Reno in a wicket maiden second over.

This brought the dangerous Wolf in and he and Denning started to put on the highest partnership of the match as the pressure built on both Horlock and Perkins. Perkins’ last 2 overs went for 26, mostly wides and to Wolf, after only conceding 3 from the first 2 and Ben’s luck was out after he lost his rag after getting an LBW shout rejected and then being top edged over the keeper for the only 6 of the day.

Ashish came in and was immediately into the action as he finally removed the stubborn Denning for 29 before Jarydd came on to try applying some spin. He was immediately effective as Wolf found him unplayable and after 2 balls turned sharply he played all around the straight one and was bowled. In the same over John edged a four before he too was bowled. Richards came in at 11 and although he and Wade made a few as Clarke bowled a single over for 1 it wasn’t long before Jarydd finished the job with Richards bowled for 6. Barry were 165 all out with 8 overs left to play and Northern could savour victory in their first match in this format of the game

Scorecards and fantasy points are below but this match doesn’t count towards overall season stats.
