About Us

Who we are

Welcome to the home of Cardiff Northern Cricket Club.

Cardiff Northern play in the Cardiff Midweek Cricket League. The club is run by secretary Dave Manley, Club Captain Ashley Chedzoy and Treasurer Dan Jones. Russell Palmer, Barrie Willacott and Charles Brain make up the core committee.

The team play games at Llandaff, Caedelyn, Blackweir and others but is made up of players from all round Cardiff and the surrounding area.

History

Cardiff Northern Cricket Club came about in a rather roundabout way.  In the 1980s there was a junior football team that was based in Whitchurch in which a young lad named Matthew Rowley played.  Years later he reformed Cardiff Northern as a Senior Sunday League team and invited his mates to play.  In 1999 Steve Palmer was looking to set up a cricket team and as several of his players came from the football team the name Cardiff Northern was ported across as the name.

This 1999 team contains several of the players who still turn out regularly today – Brett Clarke, Russell Palmer, David Manley and Barrie Willacott.  One of the star players back then was Mathew Walsh, a former work colleague of David, and he was responsible for bringing in Dan Jones who joined in 2000.  Another player who joined in 2000 was Brian “BJ” Howells, a friend of Matthew, and he was subsequently responsible for bringing along current club captain Charles Brain.

Northern’s best ever player is without doubt Steve Hood who turned up, via this website, looking for a midweek game while he commuted home on weekends to play for Ludlow in Shropshire.  However Northern have had some great players over the years and an all time Northern team would be tough to beat – names such as Hood, Walsh, Norton, Foley, Shrivastava, Jacques from SA, our Kiwi walkabout pair and of course Brett Clarke.
