After a couple of games missed Northern returned to action eager to progress in the cup. It was an eventful evening.
Northern chose to bat first and Horlock and Hood set off at a good rate while looking confident. It was soon after that the key moment of the evening occcured, after a high full toss Steve Hood swung believing it to be a no-ball. The decision wasn’t called though and Steve was dismayed to see the ball head straight to a waiting catcher and his frustration at the decision was plain for all to see.
From here on in Ben had the bulk of the batting and the responsibility and although no-one scored particularly many Ben was able to get up to 64 and a defendable target of 113. Perhaps if we’d hadn’t lost Ashley at this point we might have been nearer 125-130.
Northern started well with the ball, Horlock catching off Clarke in the first over, and Grangetown started falling well behind the run rate. At around half way they picked up the pace but wickets fell steadily, the picks of the bunch a great throw from Perkins enabling Manley to complete the run out and a direct hit from Hood.
Russell Palmer took 3 wickets but leaked some runs and an over from Brain (when again Chedzoy may have made the difference) got GAS above the rate but with it always looking likely that they would be bowled out. Little did Northern realise that a late cameo from the #10 batsman would take the game away from them – Manley putting down an edge that may have sealed the game in the penultimate over.
A better performance than in the last few weeks though and Ben batted brilliantly.
